Why Eva's Attic was set up and how it will help the community

Eva's Attic is operated by the Eva Doucas Charitable Trust. Its trustees are Theresa Gattung and Margaret Doucas.

Our mission

Margaret and Theresa and many of their friends recognise a need for a venue to donate premium clothing and other treasures to be sold at a good price to benefit charities. And not just one, but a variety of charities which are small and don't have their own shop or fundraising staff.

When our wardrobes become over full or we make a purchasing error it is helpful to know that if we don't want to sell them ourselves, these valuable items can be sold at a price that reflects their value and that this will benefit the community.

Recycling these items to an appreciative purchaser, is good for the planet and feels good too!

The charities we support

Eva's Attic is staffed purely by volunteers. We support the following charities who in-turn generously provide the volunteers in our stores:

If your charity would like to be considered, please register your interest here...

We have a deep interest in a number of charities, local and international. We believe that a just and evolved society promotes empathy and compassion as core values. The absence of these values can sometimes be seen in the abhorrent treatment of the most defenceless members of our society: small children, the elderly and animals.

Making a difference

Our charitable work will seek to make a difference in the attitudes and actions towards the weakest. We believe that the least protected in this category are animals and we shall donate to work that teaches empathy and compassion towards animals. We shall also support the work of small charities that help women get established on the road to financial independence.

In return we ask that members who work in these areas and other volunteers help in collecting and selling donated premium items. We have wonderful volunteers and are now Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. As we get more goods to sell and volunteers to staff the shop, we will open seven days and support more charities and work in the community.

Our sponsors & contributors

Thanks to all of our enthusiastic supporters, Eva's attic would not have been able to do it without you!

Who is Eva?

Eva Doucas (Margaret's mother) was a gentle lady who was born on Greece in troubled times.

In 1922 Eva's mother, Dimitra and her family fled the burning of Smyrna while Dimitra was pregnant with Eva, to Greece, where Eva was born.  Much of her childhood and early adulthood in the 1940s was spent in poverty as a displaced person but she was fortunate enough to eventually arrive in New Zealand.

She was accepting of her lot and very sympathetic of others in difficult circumstances, always giving something to charity.

Probably because of her early experiences she valued beauty and generosity. She set a good example of valuing the earth's resources and practiced recycling all her life.
